At the start of a new decade its becoming more evident as to why black women are no longer the greatest commodity in our culture, blame it on, “The Sista Girl Neck.” The term itself is used to describe many different attitudes, gestures, actions and behavioral patterns of the black woman. For instance, your significant other upsets you in some kind of way and you’re quick to send them a foul-mouthed text or ignorant voicemail.

Another example, you’re standing in line at a local store and someone steps in your path, you’re quick to roll that neck and cause a scene. Getting the picture ladies? To some of you the Sista Girl Neck may be a silent culprit but to most its present in your everyday lives. Formerly as an avid user and victim of the Sista Girl Neck, I’m here to tell you, its no longer okay.

If you haven’t realized, many black men today are no longer on the scout for black women. I’m sure you’ve heard a black man say “I’m getting a white woman,” or “I don’t date black women.” As sad as these statements sound coming from men of our own race its truly how the majority of black men are currently feeling. We’ve lately been referred to as unattractive, drama-prone, ignorant, ghetto and many other adjectives that would leave any black woman feeling less than worthy of a black man or any man for that matter, but this is most definitely not the case. Ladies, its not about our looks or the texture of our hair, its the attitude that we use to represent ourselves that makes us ugly.

As a race of women we need to be more aware of the persona we’re projecting on a daily basis ourselves that makes us ugly. We must stop rolling our eyes, snapping our necks and using the excuse of being a “woman,” to justify putting our hands on a man. Breaking the stereotype of being a typical black woman is key. Newsflash, black men have evolved just as we have and they no longer want to deal with the Laquita Jackson attitude when they can easily have a happy and healthy relationship with Cindy Matthews. By no means am I asking black women to dumb it down, but instead to be more conscious, respectable, and a lot less urban. Rather than using your facial expressions, hand gestures and raging attitude instead use your words and intelligence to blow someone out of the water. Prove everyone wrong and dismiss the stereotype of the Sista Girl Neck because not all black woman are guilty of this. We’re actually not even the only race that does this action but we are the most common to bring it out.

None of this is to be misconstrued as black men disliking black women, they do indeed love us, just minus the attitude and drama. Focus on pleasing your man rather than finding a way to win the battle or embarrass him. In certain cases and situations its okay to submit, we are after all women. Let’s raise a new generation of women with new values, morals and more love in their hearts rather than anger and attitude. Put the Sista Girl Neck in your pocket, only use when absolutely necessary.

As we grow, we all evolve. Evolution is the key to progression. Sometimes its very hard for us to see how we have changed, it takes others telling us and giving us examples of how we have changed before we can even begin to believe it.

To properly break down an evolution of this magnitude it has to be divided. The division will show the elements of her growth that culminated to present day Rihanna.

X First we will start off with the evolution of her style.

From her demeanor to her hair, Rihanna has made a complete transformation. From a young innocent girl from the islands to cutting edge style icon. In the last 5 years Rihanna’s style has evolved and grew into a notable force to be respected. Not being afraid to take chances is what keeps Rihanna at the top of her game. As she matures so does her image, each year adding more sex appeal, taking risks and pushing it to the limit. No matter where you believe she got her style from, you can’t deny that she has consistently set trends.

X Next there is her musical growth.

Rihannas growth in her music is very apparent. Listening to her discography will take you on a journey both interesting and telling. Through her music she gives us a glimpse into her life at that time all the while creating amazing art. With each album she gets a little bit more edgy, a little bit more “bad”. The strength of her content grows at the same rate as her voice.

Not knowing her personally, the motive or reasons for these changes can be disputed and debated but the actual change is evident. Whether you think its for the best or the worst, she is becoming a woman before our eyes and influencing lives everywhere. Love or hate her Rihanna has evolved to one of the biggest icons of the last decade.

In our popular culture the saying men are the new women has been stated and agreed upon. But the inverse is also true. To every cause there is an effect. Women have worked hard to become equal to men. Being equal means the same, so when you are the same and get treated the same its only fair that you also take on the same responsibilities.

Women are the natural caretakers of our lives, and hold power that the man couldn’t even think of having. When a woman strives to be dominant and take control, she does just that. Men naturally look to a women to take care of them and give them the support they need.

When a dominant woman tries to be in a relationship she is all powerful therefore causing a role reversal. Even if that man was dominant the woman will overtake him. She will do this for 2 reasons. First, women have to prove themselves and will go to extreme lengths to do so. Second, the man will let her. Women have a higher threshold for pretty much everything and men normally let women have their way, eventually.

As with men, the widely accepted diversity in sexual preference also has a lot to do with role reversal. Now, more than ever women are exploring sexuality and becoming comfortable without having a man present. The attitude of not needing a man for anything places a heavy influence on the new woman.

To see the inverse of the discussion view Are Men really the new Women?

When females said men are the new women I used take offense and feel some type of way about it. But upon looking into the matter I realized that there is some truth to the statement. I myself am not exempt, but in an effort to become a better man I am trying hard to…

become the best man that I can be with the tools and knowledge that I have been given, learning everyday how to become a better man.

Here’s a few examples that I found that hold true pretty much across the board.

1. Men gossip, and they gossip a lot. Gossip has always been apart of men’s life. Back in the day it was just barbershop/locker room exclusive for the most part, but now it has become almost as important to men as it is to women. Men call each other and talk on the phone about the latest gossip, men can also be found starting gossip. This is kind of a new concept. Men of the past were too busy working and trying to provide to worry about the goings on of others.

2. The sensitive role has become the go to role. Sensitivity is one of those dangerous traits where you have to have just the right amount. If you have too much you will be considered soft and nobody likes a soft man. If you have too little you will be looked at as cold and unapproachable. Lately guys have opted to go the soft role and show a plethora of emotions.

3. Last but not least, with different sexual preferences and ways of life being widely accepted, men have become lazy and way comfortable with being anything less than manly. Not saying that everyone has to be the macho man but having a balance is key.

Now there is nothing wrong if anything stated describes you or you find yourself doing these things. You just have to understand that men being the new women does hold true on some levels. But with that being said also comes the inverse of the argument…Women are the new Men.
